Mooring ropes are bulky, contaminated, and often classed as “hard to recycle”. Waterhaul operates the UK's only specialist UK route for polypropylene (PP) mooring rope recycling, built around the same innovation that underpins our Traceable Marine Plastic™ system.

If you manage end-of-life mooring lines at a port, marina, harbour, shipyard, aquaculture site, or offshore operation, please reach out so we help you move material up the waste hierarchy with a documented, credible recycling route.

Polypropylene mooring rope prepared for recycling in the UK

Why mooring rope needs a specialist recycling route

Standard recycling streams are not designed to handle marine ropes., in fact, now even a lot of landfills are beginning to reject ropes due to machinery entanglement. The challenges are practical and well known:

  • Long fibre material that can tangle and jam conventional equipment

  • Marine growth, grit and salt that increase wear and handling time

  • Mixed construction, splices, tape and occasional hardware

  • Inconsistent volumes and formats, from loose coils to bulk bags

In 2025, Waterhaul opened a recycling line specifically for these realities, with specialist desizing machinery, controlled preparation, and quality-focused outputs.

We can support:

  • Palletised and bagged collections (volume dependent)

  • Deliveries to our processing facility

  • Ongoing take-back for planned rope replacement cycles

  • International shipments (we're one of only a few facilities globally who can accept mooring and marine rope materials for reproccessing)

Who we work with

  • Ports and harbour authorities

  • Marinas, yacht clubs and chandlers

  • Shipyards and marine contractors

  • Aquaculture operators

  • Offshore operators and workboat fleets

  • Environmental and compliance teams managing hard-to-recycle marine materials

If you are unsure whether your ropes / lines are suitable, please contact us to send photos, site location and a rough volume estimates.

About our recycling process

Waterhaul operates a specialist mechanical recycling system for end of life marine materials, turning recovered ropes into high quality recycled polymer. The output is supplied as Traceable Marine Plastic™ pellets, ready for onward manufacturing and moulding into new products. For project based batches, we can also discuss closed loop options, including bespoke product creation using the recycled material from your own ropes.

Each intake is assessed, then prepared to remove obvious contaminants and non polymer components where possible, before being size reduced and processed into a consistent regrind and pellet format. We run controlled batches with material identification and recorded weights to support robust reporting. Where the feedstock is suitable, we can assign batch codes and provide traceability information that links your project to the recycled output and its next use.
