Our process for turning the ocean’s most harmful plastic waste into a valuable resource.

Creating polymers with a positive impact on our ocean.

Intercept

The Waterhaul team recovers ghost gear reported in Cornwall and the South West, alongside working with a variety of recovery partners and recovering end-of-life fishing gear directly from harbours; intercepting materials before they enter landfill.

Our rigorous traceability standards mean that we can account for every kilogram of material we recover. From pick-up, to pellet, to product, our digital traceability system enables tracking throughout the entire recycling process.

Sort

Intercepted fishing gear is sorted by polymer type; a crucial step in the recycling process. Careful separation at this stage allows us to ensure the highest quality output.

Shred

To prepare it for the reprocessing stage, gear is shredded into smaller fibres.

Reprocess

The shredded gear is fed into an extruder, where heat and pressure are used to firstly filter solid contaminates (i.e. sand, dust), and then extrude our raw pellet.

Pellet

The result is our Traceable Marine Plastic™ pellet, made entirely within the UK, ready for manufacturing.

Products & manufacturing

We then use these plastic pellets to create our own range of impactful products.

We also supply Traceable Marine Plastic™ to other brands and manufacturers for use in their own product lines.

Traceability

Every batch of Traceable Marine Plastic™ has a unique QR code, supplied either with the product or raw material, allowing the end-user to trace exactly where the plastic that went into their product came from.

Recycling FAQs

Our entire recycling process takes place within the UK.

The Sort and Shred stages take place at our Cornish processing facility. Bulked materials then transported to our specialist extrusion partner in Dumfries.

Recycling plastics is very carbon-efficient, with our recycled polymer having around 15% of the CO2 footprint of virgin polymers.

We currently recycle three main types of fishing gear:

  • Polypropylene - Mainly from ropes, potting and as part of nets.
  • HDPE - Fishing Nets.
  • Nylon - Gill nets and aquaculture.
